The hearing on the Kano State government’s motion to prevent Aminu Ado Bayero and four others from presenting themselves as Emirs has been postponed by the Kano State High Court. Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu ordered the adjournment on Monday, June 24, 2024.
Previously, on Thursday, a Federal High Court in Kano invalidated the state government’s actions to repeal the Kano Emirates Council Law of 2024. This repeal was initially passed by the Kano House of Assembly, which led Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to remove Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero from his position as the Emir of Kano.
Additionally, Governor Yusuf reversed the creation of four new emirates—Bichi, Rano, Karaye, and Gaya—established by the former governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. The repealed law also reinstated Muhammadu Sanusi II, who had been dethroned by Ganduje in 2020, as the Emir of Kano.
Aminu Babba Danagundi, a prominent figure in the former Kano emirate and known as Sarkin Dawaki Babba, contested the legality of this law. Through his lawyer, Chikaosolu Ojukwu (SAN), he requested the court to declare the law invalid.
Last Thursday, Justice Abdullahi Muhammad Liman ruled against the actions taken by the Kano government, instructing all involved parties to maintain the previous status quo.
