The Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a warning to individuals and groups planning protests on June 12, Democracy Day, urging them to avoid any violent or disruptive activities.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Peter Afunanya, the Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications for the DSS, announced that the agency has gathered intelligence about plans to incite violence and disrupt public order during the upcoming protests.
The DSS emphasized its commitment to ensuring public safety and national security, urging citizens to reject any calls to participate in unlawful actions.
The agency also advised those with grievances to use the appropriate legal channels to express their concerns.
Afunanya stated: “The Department of State Services (DSS) has become aware of plans by certain individuals and groups to organize physical protests in various parts of the country on June 12, 2024. These protests appear to have the objective of coinciding with the Democracy Day Celebration in a disruptive manner.
“While the rights to assembly and free expression are recognized, these rights should not be exploited to jeopardize public safety and national security. The intent of some non-state actors to incite widespread discontent through potentially violent demonstrations will not be tolerated.
“Therefore, citizens are urged to resist any calls to engage in unlawful or disorderly conduct that could lead to anarchy. Those who are dissatisfied are encouraged to express their grievances through the proper channels and procedures.
“As the nation celebrates 25 years of continuous democracy, the DSS congratulates the government and citizens and calls for ongoing patriotism, unity, and dedication to building the Nigeria we all aspire to.
“The DSS will continue to work with relevant stakeholders, including other security agencies, to maintain peace and protect lives and property nationwide. Law-abiding citizens are encouraged to go about their daily activities without fear.”
